DIY 2003

Claremont, California

June 14, 2003

About 30 of the Speaker Builder faithful gathered at the Granite Creek Community Church on Saturday June 14, 2003. Although the turnout was smaller than in past years, the quality was very high. There were no bad speakers.

Steve Schenkel is a member of the Church and arranged for the use of the facility and coordinated all the activity. A big THANK YOU to Steve!

There were three rooms set up for listening. The small room downstairs was set up for low power tube amps and associated gear. The medium sized room upstairs was home to the "Dipoles" and the largest room was host to all variety of speakers that could not be classified into the other two rooms.

I will try to describe the people and the speakers in the following pictures.

Steve Schenkel, our host, setting up his B&C Coaxials. They sounded great.

A general view of the large listening room

John Koval with his 2 1/2 way

Co-axial Towers by Charles Sprinkle. These have passive radiators on the sides.

Don Maurer with his all software digital crossover and Phoenix Dipoles. These use the SEAS Milleniun drivers and Peerless woofers.

Don's Digital Phoenix and dipole Bass in the middle listening room. These put out great sound with realistic smooth bass, crystal clear mids and silky highs. Don's software produces dead flat frequency response and ZERO phase shift. This is really the wave of the future. Although the software is still in the developement stage, it is not very far away from being available to everyone. Keep up the good work, Don.

Ira and his newest creation

Dave Crawford and his Adire 281's. Beautiful cabinets with Cherry fronts and blue painted sides. Good job, Dave.

Tony Gomez with his Usher 2-ways designed by Dennis Murphy. Great looking cabinets with Walnut sides and the center part painted with spray-can Truck Bed Liner. Another great innovation from "Gomer".

Peter Ashford with his GR research speakers

Steve Houlihan sitting on his Dipole Bass cabinets, proving they make great seating for guests or handy end tables. They sound pretty good as well.

After the event, a bunch of people went to dinner at Appleby's Restaurant in nearby Montclair. From the left we have Peter Ashford, Stephanie Gates, Ira, John Koval, Mike Thompson, Steve Schenkel, Tony Gomez, Don Maurer, Janet Ross and Steve Houlihan. Dave Crawford is missing since he took this picture.

Another dinner picture. Here Steve is taking the picture so we see a guy I can't remember on the left, then Alan and a good shot of the beautiful Janet Ross and Dave Crawford on the right.
